Pure gold is the purest, so why don't jewellers use it for rings? 24K is soft and bends and scratches easily, so jewellery is made in 22K or 21K with stronger metals, while 24K is kept for bars and coins. See today's 24K vs 22K prices in Dubai and what to check before you buy a ring.

Why aren't rings made of 24 karat gold? Because pure gold is soft. Really soft. It bends and scratches easily. So jewellers mix it with stronger metals. That gives you 22 karat or 21 karat. And 24 karat? That's for bars and coins. Today, 24 karat is about five hundred four dirhams a gram. 22 karat is about four sixty-seven. Buying a ring at the souk? Check the 22 karat rate, not 24, and look for the 916 stamp. Follow for tomorrow's rate.
